UH Rainbow Provides Compassionate Care to UH Caregiver
Kerry Christy, CNP, Senior Nurse Practitioner, UH Rainbow Babies & Children's, went in for a routine pregnancy checkup at UH when she received the news that she needed an emergency c-section.
“I just was like, this can't be happening," Kerry shared. "Everything was fine. I thought I was having a normal pregnancy. I was terrified."
As Kerry was prepped for surgery, her team of coworkers came to her side to support her. "In that moment of panic, I looked up and there was my entire surgical team coming to check on me," said Kerry. "Seeing them in that moment of panic was a moment of relief - I'm going to be ok, I'm in a great place."
Edward M. Barksdale, Jr., MD, Surgeon-in-Chief, UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, and the Robert J. Izant, Jr., MD, Chair in Pediatric Surgery, was on his way to his son's football game out of state - but turned around and went back into work to check on Kerry when he got word that she was going to deliver her son.
"Kerry is almost like a daughter of mine and I know how much she wants to be a mother," Dr. Barksdale said. "I wanted to be there because I felt that I was part of her support system."
Today, Kerry's son Patrick is two years old and doing well, thanks to the care Kerry and Patrick received at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's.
