A Second Chance at Life
Elyria resident Cheryl Ryan has always been active. Even in retirement, she walked five to seven miles nearly every day. But on July 23, 2016, she woke up in the middle of the night with a “heaviness" on her chest. After being transported by ambulance to UH Elyria Medical Center, Cheryl's heart stopped beating. Right away, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute interventional cardiologist Charles O'Shaughnessy, MD, performed an emergency PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) with stent implantation.
Thanks to the immediate, life-saving care she received at UH Elyria, Cheryl is back to walking five to seven miles almost every day of the week with no post-cardiac event issues. She continues to see Dr. O'Shaughnessy twice per year for routine check-ups.
“I have been going to UH Elyria for 50 years," said Cheryl. “My husband and I, and our entire family extend our gratitude to the Elyria Fire Department, UH Elyria emergency department staff, the eighth floor cardiovascular unit and North Ohio Heart staff."

- Achieving designation as a provisional Level 3 trauma center, certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, accreditation as a Chest Pain Center by the American College of Cardiology and accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers making the Hampson Mole Breast Suite the only accredited breast center in Lorain County.
- Expanding Cardiac Surgery Team and Cardiovascular Specialty Services at UH Elyria Medical Center. A core team of four highly skilled surgeons is now performing advanced coronary artery bypass graft surgery, aortic and mitral valve surgery, and minimally invasive operations. UH Elyria Medical Center is the only hospital in Lorain County offering cardiac surgery and a full-service Level III cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
- Retaining and recruiting more than 300 primary care and specialty physicians to our community, supporting our goal to provide patients and their families with great care close to home.
