Gift Establishes New Master Clinician at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute

Heather Gornik, MD
Heather Gornik, MD, was recently named the inaugural John B. Lally Family Master Clinician in Fibromuscular Dysplasia and Vascular Care.

The Lally family has a long history of supporting medical causes. When tasked with distributing money from the family foundation and her late brother’s estate, Dana Lally Haugli elected to support the work of Heather Gornik, MD, Co-Director, Vascular Center, UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, and her research in fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), a rare blood vessel disorder.

As a result, the John B. Lally Family Master Clinician in Fibromuscular Dysplasia and Vascular Care was established in February 2022. The position is named in honor of Dana’s father.

Dana said Dr. Gornik, who will serve as the inaugural Lally Master Clinician, was able to do what no other doctor had done — identify why she’d had a stroke.

“This gift is such an incredible honor for me personally,” said Dr. Gornik. “I am so grateful to the Lally family for this ‘shot in the arm,’ which has reinvigorated my dedication to the field of FMD and arterial dissection.”

Funding from the position will help create a biorepository of blood and urine samples to catalyze FMD research. “We hope the biorepository will fuel international collaborations that help us better understand these disorders,” explained Dr. Gornik. “It will also allow us to train vascular medicine specialists to care for patients with FMD so that there are experts in these conditions throughout the United States.”
