Cleveland Arts Perform for UH Caregivers

Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Ballet perform for UH caregivers

Over the last several months, the coronavirus pandemic has caused immense stress on our community. Two of Northeast Ohio’s finest arts institutions, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Ballet, wanted to help ease that stress on caregivers and patients alike by providing a momentary break to focus on something a bit more therapeutic – the arts.

On June 15, patients and caregivers at UH Seidman Cancer Center were audience to an incredible visit from members of The Cleveland Orchestra. As part of a salute to heath care workers, these world-renowned musicians will perform at Northeast Ohio community hospitals through July 8. Chamber groups adhere to social distancing guidelines, with performances limited to those at each hospital.

Kristy Neylon, a social-work supervisor at UH Seidman, was able to enjoy the performance. "It was lovely," Neylon said. "It felt like things are getting back to where they need to be...I think it was just a pleasant relief."

The Cleveland Ballet held a live performance in the atrium of UH Cleveland Medical Center on June 3. While wearing masks and socially distanced from the audience, the dancers performed to a medley of Frank Sinatra songs.

"Sinatra represented America in the most influential way through love and unity,” said Cleveland Ballet Artistic Director and renowned choreographer, Gladisa Guadalupe. “This is my way of thanking those who have given nothing but love and unity during these difficult times."

University Hospitals is grateful to all individuals and organizations willing to help our caregivers, patients and community during the COVID-19 crisis. Community response and caregiver support funds have been established to support the extensive patient care, medical supplies, research and education needs.
